As the holiday season approaches, Madeira is filled with enchanting lights, festive markets and charming traditions. If you are looking to experience the island uniquely, Madeira in Christmas is the perfect destination. Therefore, in this guide, we’ll explore everything you need to know about spending the holiday on the beautiful Portuguese island, from traditional celebrations to must-visit attractions and seasonal treats.
Why Visit Madeira Island in Christmas?
Known for its breathtaking landscapes and unmatched nature, Madeira offers a one-of-a-kind Christmas experience. Besides, its mild temperatures year-round make it an ideal destination for those who wish to avoid the cold without missing out on the festive spirit. Moreover, the island comes alive with Christmas lights, decorations and events that celebrate Madeiran traditions.
Christmas Lights and Decorations
One of the highlights of Madeira in Christmas is the light display that adorns Funchal’s streets. From December 1st until January 8th, it is very common for couples and families to walk around the main streets of Funchal to see the Christmas lighting, especially the emblematic Christmas tree located on Avenida do Mar. Additionally, the beautifully decorated shop windows along the streets add to the holiday charm.
“Lapinhas”
Another tradition is the nativity cribs. These can be built in the form of a staircase or in a rock-shaped design and are generally referred to as “Lapinha”. They consist of a small altar with a small baby Jesus figure at the top. The rest of the steps are adorned with other nativity scene figures as well as fruits and wheat seeds. Some of these “Lapinhas” are also made to imitate mountains and grottoes, recreating the landscape of the island.
Traditional Christmas Celebrations and Events
Market Night
One of the most awaited Christmas traditions is the “Noite do mercado” (Market Night), held on December 23rd. This tradition dates back to the year 1890 and was originally a time for people to buy fresh fruits and vegetables for the festivities. Nowadays, it is mostly an evening filled with music and entertainment, where Madeirans can enjoy a traditional “carne de vinha d’alhos” sandwich, the regional “poncha” and a vibrant atmosphere until the early hours of the morning.
Madeira Christmas Market
Besides the iconic “Noite do Mercado“, there are other Christmas markets during the holiday season. Along Avenida Arriaga there is usually the “Aldeia de Natal” (Christmas Village) where you can find little wooden cottages offering all sorts of local delicacies to try.
Christmas Masses
The Midnight Mass, also known as “Missa do Galo” (Rooster Mass), takes place on Christmas Eve. Likewise, starting on December 16, nine holy masses, known as “Missas do Parto” are held between 5 and 7 a.m., symbolizing Mary’s months of pregnancy with Jesus. After these masses, it’s tradition for locals to gather and share food and drinks while enjoying Christmas carols.
What to Eat and Drink During Christmas in Madeira
Madeira’s culinary offerings are an essential part of the Christmas experience. Beyond the famous honey cake and poncha, the island boasts a rich variety of seasonal foods. Additionally, on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, most families prepare traditional dishes such as “carne vinha d’alhos” (pork meat marinated in wine, vinegar, garlic and spices), chicken soup and various types of typical cookies, including honey, butter, beer, and coconut varieties.
